In the 1950?s, another important development was made in the watch world, when the first electric timepiece was unveiled to the world. This paved the way for a new generation of watches and watch manufacturers. That generation came to a forefront in the 1970?s when the world?s first ever digital model was tested and launched. Films such as Stanley Kubrick?s 2001: A Space Odyssey created a buzz in the western world, with a taster of what was about to be bestowed on them! The use of digital in futuristic fiction was depicted as a new way of life and pioneered watch model development for generations to come. Starting off with LED displays where inorganic materials were passed a current through, the various watch manufacturers in the arena joined forces to pioneer a new form of electric transfer. This new means of display is still prevalent now in the modern millennium, known as Liquid Crystal Display (more commonly referred to as LCD). This was a revolutionary movement and a real landmark for the digital watch industry, as the new form of technology required less power output and allowed for permanent display of digits. In fact, not only were the newer models more efficient, they also allowed for more characters or digits to be displayed at once, so this opened the door for manufacturers to include ?seconds? in their time display, to become even more precise! The digital world went from strength to strength in the 1980?s when sleeker looking models were released with more groundbreaking features introduced. These included date displays, stopwatches, thermometers and even translators! Casio was the first manufacturer to produce a watch that had the functionality to dial the user?s telephone number and taking it one mighty step further, in 1987 Citizen launched the first voice recognition model! As time has gone on and models have continued to refine both in terms of efficiency and technical enhancements, Digital watches have played a key role in many people?s lives. Fashion trends and more sophisticated functionality from analogue counterparts have seen digital watches come in and out of fashion over the last couple of decades.
